Veteran Coach Kevin Krieger Joins Chesterton Girls Basketball Staff as an Assistant Coach and Youth Development Leader

Chesterton Girls Basketball is proud to welcome Coach Kevin Krieger to its already experienced and accomplished coaching staff as an Assistant Coach and Head of Youth Development for the 2025–26 season. A highly respected figure in Indiana high school basketball, Krieger brings more than 20 years of coaching experience, a strong foundation in education, and a deep passion for mentoring and developing young athletes.

A Valparaiso Foundation

Krieger’s basketball journey began just down the road at Valparaiso High School, where he graduated in 1991. Coach Krieger played for the Vikings under Hall of Fame coach Bob Punter and was known for his basketball IQ, leadership, and relentless work ethic. He was a varsity letterwinner who contributed to several highly competitive Valpo teams in the Duneland Athletic Conference and state tournament.

His time as a Viking left a lasting impression. The culture, discipline, and preparation he experienced helped shape the foundation of his coaching philosophy—one rooted in fundamentals, team identity, and high expectations.

Building Winners Across States

Krieger’s first major coaching stop came at Wyman King Academy in South Carolina, where he made an immediate impact. He led the boys’ basketball team to a State Runner-Up finish in 2001 and followed it up with an Elite Eight appearance in 2002, showcasing his ability to quickly build a state-level contender. He also coached the girls’ varsity program during his time there, gaining valuable experience with both boys’ and girls’ teams.

Success at Morgan Township

After returning to Indiana, Krieger took over the girls’ varsity program at Morgan Township High School, where he led the team for 10 seasons. His teams posted a 129–99 record, highlighted by:

  • 3 Sectional Championships

  • 1 Porter County Conference (PCC) Tournament Title

  • 1 PCC Regular Season Championship

Krieger then transitioned to the boys’ varsity program at Morgan, leading the team for five seasons and compiling a 70–44 record. Under his leadership, the program achieved:

  • 3 PCC Regular Season Titles

  • 1 PCC Tournament Championship

  • An impressive 22-game winning streak in PCC play over a three-year span.  Krieger is one of the few coaches in Porter County Conference history to win tournament titles with both boys’ and girls’ teams—a testament to his adaptability, basketball mind, and commitment to team culture.

Educator and Mentor

Off the court, Krieger is a veteran educator with more than 17 years of classroom experience, teaching government, economics, and history at the high school level. He is known for building strong relationships with students, instilling life skills alongside academics, and bringing the same standard of excellence to the classroom that he expects on the hardwood.

Leading Youth Development at Chesterton

In addition to his varsity coaching duties, Krieger will also serve as Head of Youth Development, focusing on building the foundation of Trojan Girls Basketball program through K–8 player development, skills clinics, and community outreach. His goal is to create a consistent and connected pipeline that fosters growth, passion, and pride for Trojan basketball at every level.

Family & Community

Coach Krieger lives in Chesterton with his wife, Dana, and their two daughters. Coach Krieger and his wife are both teachers at Morgan Township.  He credits his family’s support as a central part of his coaching journey and values being active in the local community.

“We are incredibly excited to add Coach Krieger to our staff,” said Head Coach Candy Wilson. “He brings not only experience and success, but a heart for teaching, mentoring, and building from the ground up. He’s a perfect fit for where we’re going as a program.”
